Last year, I gave a talk at CSIcon in Las Vegas about “The Future of Human Improvement,” and specifically about medical and technological breakthroughs that are on the horizon.
I had given a similar talk the year before at the Cheltenham Science Festival, which needed several updates in just that one year that had passed – that’s how fast the science is developing! From engineering our immune systems to advances in human-machine interfaces, we are on the brink of some major breakthroughs that have only existed in science fiction and in our dreams.
The point that I open my talk with is that using our minds to improve our bodies is nothing new or scary. Humans have been doing this since the dawn of time. From splints and bandages to eyeglasses, the microscope, and the wheel, humans have been extending the healing and functioning of our bodies. Even the very first piece of technology we know of – the hand axe – can be seen as a means of pushing our body past its own limitations. Other creatures hunt and fish with their limbs and mouths – we fashion spears and hooks. What are tools except ways to extend the functioning of our bodies?
Most of these exciting new breakthroughs are targeted at curing the sick and healing the injured – a vaccine against multiple sclerosis, restoring movement (and speech!) to the paralyzed, training our immune system to find and kill cancer – but it is not hard to imagine how these advancements could be used to prevent illness in the first place and even enhance the baseline functioning of our bodies.
Will we all be cyborgs one day soon??? I doubt it, but the message I leave you with here is that we ought not let fear of the possibilities prevent us from delivering these technologies to those that desperately need our help.
